I have 8 sexed chicks so far, 7 cocks and one hen! - anyone after normal cocks??!!
-
I have acquired some Timors as a bit of a challenge, I have been looking to see if there is a show standard so I know what to aim for with my breeding. I am aware that they will readily hybridize with regular zebs so am keeping them separate.
I have searched the internet but cannot find any standard specification

Last year only my lightbacks threw chicks out, this year several of my pairs have thrown out chicks. I can't think what is different this year
Any tips? Anything I can do to stop this?

welcome to the addictive world of zebra finches, if you have 1 now, I bet in 6 months you will have lots!

I'm in Frome (Somerset is a big county!)

I'm still trying to get my head round zebra finch genetics. I have a pair of normal who have produced 3 chicks, one is obviously a normal, the other 2 look that they will be fawn. Checking my genetics list it says fawn is sex linked. So, please help me - does that mean that those 2 chicks are hens?? - does it mean both parents are split fawn??

but will the chicks be ok with just Dad looking after them? He was feeding them when I left hom this morning

I have a pair of CFW with 5 chicks. Mum has been looking increasingly bald and I thought it was the cock plucking her
Last night I noticed that the chicks who are due to fledge in next few days have been plucked. I removed the cock and watched, the hen was plucking her own feathers out. I have now returned the cock but removed the hen. Does this sound OK?

so sorry you are having a bad run. I must be having beginners luck - 20 chicks rung (2 too big to ring with 2016 rings) and now another box starting to hatch - well one so far (5 eggs in the nest)

2 in my first lot (see my blog for photo!) About 20 more waiting for when I get home from holiday!

Thank you

I'm new to this game and just have my first chicks. How long do I leave them with the parents?

I have a continental CFW hen and that is who he is paired with - they have 6 eggs - lets see what happens!

2 hours ago, Andyn said:Hi Penny and welcome to the Forum.
If I guess correctly your partner contacted me yesterday and I suggested you try this Forum.
It would depend on what level of keeping Zebies you feel you want to try.
If its just a hobby with a communal Aviary then you would probably get mixed colours but if you feel showing is the way to go, I think cage breeding is best with same colour birds.
Normal Cocks can be split for e.g. Fawn or CFW and could possibly produce hens of those colours but if you want to breed those colours 100% then colour to colour is best in the first year. You then can see if any of your cocks are split. Good luck and as I said you would be very welcome to visit once my new Bird Room is up and running.
Anyway Enjoy your new hobby and ask away with your questions.
cheers
Andyn
would love to visit your set up when it is ready, thank you

I'm planning on cage breeding so I know who the parents are. I would like to breed birds I could show in the future. Yes, it was my partner who contacted you.

I have just started keeping zebra finches. Never had birds before, in previous years just dogs, cats and guinea pigs! My partner always used to keep and breed budgies and is getting back into the hobby again, so I decided to go for zebras. I have started with a small flock, 2 cocks - one normal, one fawn and 4 hens - one normal, one fawn, one light back and one chestnut flank white. I am keeping cocks and hens separate for the moment as I don't want to start breeding them yet - need the new bird house up and running first!
As a newbie I will be looking here for advice, I'm looking forward to see what colours I might bread from the birds I have. I really like the cfw but if I'm right I will need a cfw cock to make sure I get more of them. Does anyone have a cfw cock for sale? (preferably within 100 miles of Bath)
Very few female chicks hatching?
