expanding outlook

This bird keeping hobby is taking over! Today we went to a bird sale and came back with a pair of Bicheno (owl) finches and a pair of firetails. Both beautiful birds, this is for our aviary scheduled to be up and running this spring, oh, and I managed to acquire 6 more zebras - not quite sure how ;-)

The pair of finches I put down as I left for holiday had one egg (from 5) hatch yesterday - no others have hatched so I'm thinking they may be no good - well, one baby, 2 parents, it should be well looked after!

hi they are lovely bird that you bought, just a couple of things though the owl finches closely related to the zebs and could mate giving you hybrids (if they are put in your aviary together, plus they need heat which i found out after mine died

Penny,

Hope the new birds do good.

Regarding One egg from five hatching. I know you probably were away but it might be useful to number your eggs as they are laid. That way you would know if it was #5 that hatched there is a strong possibility that no others will. But give them a day or two more. This might also help if you are candling the eggs and have more than 1 fertile etc.

Hi Penny,

If the eggs were laid on consecutive days the chick maybe the first egg that was laid by the hen, therefore you could have a chick hatch every day from now on.

Just a thought.

Penny you said -"This bird keeping hobby is taking over"  guess you should have been warned when you bought  your first zebra finch they have a of habit of hypnotising you so the next time you visit a pet store you can't leave without buying a little feathered friend.

Sorry to inform you that there is no cure for this and it lasts a lifetime. :D
