Hi all,

This here is going to be a day by day status update and blog on my 3 pairs of breeding zebra finches.

I currently have 2 pairs in a cage and the 3rd pair in a separate smaller cage.

There names are from left to right;

Blue, Penguin, Brownie, Black, Ice, Snow.

I first started out with one pair, Blue and an Isabel male.My Isabel male was killed by a hawk and Blue luckily survived the attack. She mourned him for days until I introduced her to Snow and Ice. Snow and Ice both shared a teeny weeny cage at the pet shop. The owner thought that since both had a white base color they would produce white babies (Ice is a white hen and Snow is a CreamCheeked cock) When they were first introduced to Blue both parties kept their distance and slept on separate perches for the night. The next day I saw Snow FLIRTING with Blue! Ice was jealous. I knew this setup would cause fights sooner or later and that I needed to get a 2nd male.

A week later I went out to buy a second male, that's when I met Brownie. He was a beautiful grey bird. On my way home I went by another pet-shop to get them seed and I notIced he had a Blackfaced Blackcheek cock. I instantly bought Black and a female Penguin for him. I called her Penguin for artistic reasons.

At first all 6 birds shared a medium sized cage, with three nest baskets. Black and Penguin Instantly paired up while the love triangle between Snow, Blue and Ice was still going on. Black kept checking the nest boxes and when he finally settled on one, he brought Penguin to see it, the next moment they were collecting shredded Kleenex of the cage floor.

Occasionally another cock would go check out the nests and roost in one for 2 minutes before being chased away by Black. It seemed that Black had chosen a nest and decided that the others are not getting nests for their own!? I sent Black and Penguin to the smaller cage with a nest basket and all was good. For now.

Snow and Blue finally paired up and stare=ted building their nest. Brownie was singing non-stop for Ice and she was Ignoring him. He stuffed his nest with kleenex and occasionally Ice would come up and check it, then she would kick him out and roost in his nest ALONE. Now, A week later, Black and Penguin are doing great, Blue and Snow are done with their nest and Ice has finally accepted Brownie as her mate. Every now and then I find Ice attempting to preen Snow but Snow is a faithful guy and usually flies back to Blue or the nest.
